DISORDERLY drinkers face being barred from Wantage pubs for a month under a new crackdown.

Police will pass on the names of anyone arrested or given a dispersal notice to the town’s Pubwatch group of landlords.

Landlords will then get to choose if they want to ban them.

Vale and South area commander Supt Andy Boyd said “There still remain a few individuals intent on drinking too much and causing antisocial behaviour.”

Crime linked to drinking has fallen across Vale and South but not in Wantage, he said.

Craig Gradwell, landlord at The Swan in Market Place, has banned three men and a woman recently.

He said: “We are trying to give people a warning that if they are going to act up after drinking in our pubs then they will not be welcome back for a while.”

Until now, Pubwatch members banned drinkers in the most severe cases for a year. They then have to write to Pubwatch to be allowed back into town pubs.
