Man died from the surgery he wanted despite risk
A MAN died after high-risk surgery on a large aneurism, an inquest found.
Owen Duffy, 88, of Frethern Close, Burford, had surgery on a 7.5cm abdominal aortic aneurysm – a bulge in the blood vessel – at the John Radcliffe Hospital on April 29 last year.
The retired drilling engineer died a week later following complications, Oxfordshire Coroners’ Court heard last Tuesday.
A statement from his GP at Burford Surgery, Simon Albert, said he was keen to have the surgery despite the high risk.
Oxfordshire Coroner Darren Salter gave a narrative verdict.
He said: “It is likely a wire [used during the surgery] caused a puncture or bleed during the procedure, this being a known but rare complication.”
