FIRE crews helped free a man who was trapped under about two tonnes of compacted cardboard at an Oxford supermarket last night.

The 32-year-old man was trapped when a stack of large compressed bales of recycled cardboard fell on him at Aldi, Botley Road, Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said.

Firefighters were called at 9pm and worked to free his trapped left leg while paramedics administered first aid and pain relief.

He was taken to hospital for treatment to the leg.

A spokesman said: “Initially the paramedics were very concerned about the extent of the leg injury as they could not gain access the trapped limb.

“The rescue was particularly difficult as the fallen bales of cardboard were very unstable and could have resulted in the collapse of shelving immediately above the casualty”.
