MORE rainfall is expected tonight after flooding affected several parts of the county.

A flood alert is in place for a stretch of the Thames between several villages and hamlets in West Oxfordshire and open countryside near Wolvercote roundabout.

Today, the Environment Agency said more rainfall tonight was expected that could lead to river levels rising further still.

Several parts of the city and the wider county have been affected today, with several roads shut.

In West Challow, near Grove, the A417 is closed due to flooding at Silver Lane.

Elsewhere, the following road closures are in place:

A flood warning - issued when flooding is expected and householders and businesses nearby should take immediate precautions - is still in place today for a stretch along the Thames from Buscot Wick down to Shifford, including Buscot, Kelmscott, Radcot, the Lower Bampton area and the area around Chimney.

A statement from the Environment Agency today said: "River levels on the River Thames remain very high, but mostly stable though levels are continuing to rise very slowly in the Shifford area. The river remains responsive to further rainfall. The weather forecast is to expect a mainly dry day on Thursday but overnight and into Friday there will be futher showers, which may be heavy at times."

The weather today is set to be dry and bright, but there will be strong winds and rain in the county overnight, the Met Office says.

The rain will be heavy at times.

Tomorrow it will be wet and windy in the morning, with some heavy outbreaks of rain for a time. During the afternoon it will stay windy, with some heavy showers coming along.
