A MAJOR road which closed for a year for a £1m rebuilding project after water damage caused a landslip has reopened.
The A4183, which links Oxford and Abingdon, was closed on December 20 last year after subsidence between Hinksey Hill and Bagley Wood started to create cracks in the road surface.
The damage was caused by heavy rain in November last year which flooded large parts of Oxford and the surrounding areas, and a major rebuilding programme has taken place.
The road was closed soon after the surface began to crack, and diversions were put in place before a supporting embankment failed, causing a 60-metre section of road to slip down the hillside.
Highways teams then stabilised the embankment to prevent any further movement and to protect utility services.
They spent the following months completing detailed ground surveys and designing the repair work.
The £1m project has now been finished including a rebuilt embankment, a new drainage system and resurfacing of a 200m length of road.
