The artisan delights of Oxford’s Christmas Market leave MARC WEST feeling in a fine festive mood

When it comes to Christmas, I have to admit, I can be a bit of a Scrooge.

But, the magical atmosphere of Oxford’s annual Christmas Market (along with a glass of mulled wine or two) completely won me over and I’m now full of the joys of the season.

Set in the heart of the city against the beautiful backdrop of The Broad, the German-style street event boasts more than 40 independent traders selling their wares – offering a unique opportunity to pick up something truly special for all the family.

Neal’s Yard Dairy served up some delicious farm cheeses from across the British Isles – such as Montgomery’s Cheddar, Tunworth and Colston Bassett. Headington-based artisan coffee roaster Exotic Coffee Roasters were on hand with their exceptionally smooth Columbian blend.

And, the world’s first liquid deli Demijohn (who have recently set-up shop permanently just around the corner in Little Clarendon Street) sported a unique selection of handmade drinks. It’s an award-winning shopping experience that reflects owner Angus Ferguson’s memory of visiting Italian cantinas as a student in the early 1990’s – allowing you to try something completely original and delicious in an extremely fun way.

So, that was all my Christmas shopping wrapped up in one go. But, my folks will just have to wait until the big day to find out exactly what the big man has brought them.

The market runs until this Sunday and you can shop until you drop from 10am until 7pm – when it really comes alive with lights and music from local choirs performing all your favourite carols.

If, like me, you’re a conscious shopper, be sure to check out a hidden gem tucked away off the bustling Cowley Road. East Oxford Farmers’ & Community Market takes place every Saturday morning from 10am at East Oxford Primary School and was a recent finalist in the BBC Radio 4 Food & Farming Awards.

Established in 2006 as a non-profit making organization and run by an enthusiastic group of volunteers, this small friendly market can easily provide the staples for your weekly shop – all from sources within 30 miles of our fair city. Eggs (from literally just round the corner), milk, vegetables and meats as well as handmade jewellery, clothing and second-hand books are all up for grabs. Personally, I love the Tiddly Pommes juice (pressed from OX4 apples), Crudges cheeses (from near Chipping Norton) with bread from The Natural Bread Company and the amazing scotch eggs from Kirsty’s Kitchen.

There’s also a cafe serving delicious breakfasts, cakes and fairtrade drinks. It’s a lovely place to meet up and take a break from all that shopping and Magdalen Road’s Oxfork occasionally pops-up here too… if so, you’re in for a real gastronomic treat, believe me. And finally, as a little pre-Christmas treat, the team behind the eagerly anticipated Chester pub in Iffley Fields will be throwing open their doors for a very limited time only – to give OX4 residents a taste of what is to come as well as celebrate what’s been achieved already. The place is by no means finished (expect building site chic), but the team tell me they feel they’re getting out of practice and can’t wait to pull a pint or two – and tell a few bad bar jokes!

As the kitchen is currently being rebuilt, there’ll be limited food, but the much-loved Chester Street watering hole will be serving up local ales from the likes of Loose Cannon Brewery, Fisher & Co and perhaps even the odd festive cocktail.

“It’s been a tough few months”, says manager Drew Brammer. “But, we’re almost there. So, put on your glad rags and come celebrate with us.”

The (renamed) Chester will be open for three days from tonight until Saturday from 6-10pm. If you’re a nosey neighbour feel free to drop by and make yourself at home in your new local hub.
