MIENEKE Cox’s first volume of The Story of Abingdon almost became history itself.
But thanks to her son Pieter – a submariner with the Royal Navy – it is in print again after more than 20 years.
Local historian, lecturer and museum curator Mrs Cox published The Story of Abingdon Part One in 1987.
Parts two and three followed in 1990 and 1993, and the final instalment, Abingdon – an 18th Century Country Town, was published in 1999.
The books proved popular and the 300 copies of volume one soon sold out, but Abingdon Museum said it is still getting requests for it.
Mrs Cox died in 2009, but now with the encouragement of the Abingdon Archaeological and Historical Society, Commander Cox has had the books republished.
The book is available in the museum, Abingdon book shops and the town Information Centre, as a £10 single volume or as a new four-volume box set for £30.
