PRIMARY school children sang their hearts out at two carol concerts.

More than 500 pupils from across Oxfordshire entertained audiences at Oxford Town Hall, in St Aldate’s, to raise money for charity.

Youngsters from 20 schools performed well-known tunes including Jingle Bells for the Big Christmas Sing.

The shows, held last night and on Tuesday, were for Christian Aid.

It was the first time SS Mary and John School in Cowley Road had taken part in the event with the school choir from Years 4, 5, and 6 performing.

Pupil Hazel Loadman, 11, said: “It was nerve-wracking at first but when we went up you were with all your friends singing and it was nice.

“It was really encouraging when we got a massive clap from the audience.”

The school sang Away in a Manger and Hark the Herald Angels Sing.

The choir’s finale featured children performing Maori Christmas carol Te Harinui and The Christmas Bells, and the audience joined in with carols.

Primary schools Ladygrove Park, Grove, Cumnor, Windmill, Bayards Hill and Pegasus took part both evenings.

Since the first Big Christmas Sing the event has raised more than £7,000 for Christian Aid. The event was led by Liz Stock, from the council music service, with Jessica Hall and Amy Lockwood from Christian Aid compering.
