THE quarry where a man was killed in an industrial accident yesterday remained closed while investigations are carried out.

Les Hole, 52, died after an accident at Burford Quarry, between Burford and Brize Norton.

Mr Hole, of Broadmarsh Lane, died at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford on Saturday. He was airlifted to the hospital shortly after the accident at about 10.30am.

The Health & Safety Executive is investigating the incident and the quarry yesterday remained closed while investigations continued.

Andrew Smith, joint managing director of Smiths Bletchington, said: “Les was a well-respected employee and colleague at Smiths, and had worked for us since 1989, most latterly as the foreman at Burford Quarry.

“Of course, our immediate concern is for Les’s wife, children and close family. Our heartfelt condolences go to them, and they are very much in our thoughts.

“But also Les was a popular man in the local community, particularly through his sporting activities, and our sympathies are also with all those many friends that will be saddened by his loss.”

Thames Valley Police confirmed officers were called to the scene at 10.21am and that the case had been passed to the Health and Safety Executive.
