A 97-year-old partially blind woman who was trapped by closing bus doors has thanked the driver who rescued her.

Mary Walton was trying to get off the number 4 bus at Oxford station when she said the doors shut on her suddenly almost two weeks ago.

She said: “I am beginning to get over it now but the door closed on my shoulders and they are still bruised.”

Mrs Walton had just been getting an eye test in Elms Parade and was on her way home to Abingdon Road with her partner Graham Wintle, when it happened at about 2pm on October 10.

Mr Wintle got out of the back doors of the bus carrying a bag of shopping, and put out his hand for Mrs Walton to take. But as she stepped down the doors closed on her.

She said: “I screamed because I didn’t know what was happening.”

The bus driver rushed to help her escape and see that she was ok.

Mrs Walton said: “The driver was so upset. I want to thank him for his kindness.”

Oxford Bus Company operations director Phil Southall said: “We are concerned to hear about this but we’ve had no contact from the woman in question.

“If she gets in touch with us we can investigate what happened.

“Incidents like this are few and far between and the doors are designed so they won’t close completely if there is an obstruction of any kind,” he added.
