Canal Day celebrates its 10th anniversary with 20,000 well-wishers
THE quaintly named Edith Mary Lee won the best narrowboat prize during the day when more than 20,000 people helped celebrate this year’s Banbury Canal Day.
People enjoyed the sunshine along the Oxford Canal around Castle Quay shopping centre for the event’s 10th birthday when barges, live music, food and stalls catered for the crowds.
Banbury Mayor Nicholas Turner said: “This annual event recognises the importance of the canal in Banbury’s history, and it is wonderful to see so many boats here. All the moorings on both sides of the canal are taken and it really is a colourful sight.”
Banbury Cross Players won the prize for the best decorated stall at the event. Best narrowboat prize went to Vivienne Nockles’ Edith Mary Lee.
