Oxford Playhouse performance cancelled at last minute
ABOUT 600 theatre-goers were disappointed last night when the opening performance of 1984 at Oxford Playhouse was cancelled at the last minute.
The theatre in Beaumont Street has confirmed the audience members will be offered refunds and exchanges for their tickets and the remaining performances will go head as planned.
Spokeswoman Bethan James said: "Prior to last night’s opening performance of Headlong’s 1984 at Oxford Playhouse, there were some unforeseen technical difficulties and sadly the show had to be cancelled.
“1984 is a very technically demanding show and despite best efforts by Headlong’s team and the staff at Oxford Playhouse, we were not able to rectify the problem and for safety reasons we regrettably had to make the very difficult decision to cancel the show. All safety checks have now been fully carried out and tonight’s performance will open as planned.
“We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused to our audience last night. Ticket holders have been contacted and offered exchanges or refunds."
The production re-examines the 20th century classic by George Orwell, exploring surveillance and identity.
