New licences aim to thwart stolen metal trade
7:00am Wednesday 2nd October 2013 in News
SCRAP metal dealers now have to have a licence to trade after laws to tackle metal theft were introduced yesterday.
The Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 means all scrap metal dealers, motor salvage operators, and vehicle dismantlers have to apply to their local council for a licence before October 15.
If they have not got one by December 1, they could be prosecuted and face restrictions or a fine of up to £1,000.
All dealers must also keep a record of the metal they deal with, including the date they received it and the details of the people they bought it from and sold it to. The new law also bans cash transactions.
There were 2,052 metal thefts across the Thames Valley between April 2012 and March 2013, a drop of 48 per cent in the same period the year before.
