A blood transfusion system which prevents errors and is saving Oxfordshire’s NHS hospitals £500,000 a year has won a national award.
Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust’s blood management system won the efficiency in pathology services prize at the Health Service Journal (HSJ) Efficiency Awards.
It uses barcode labels that identify patients, handheld computers at bedsides, and electronically-controlled blood fridges to speed up delivery of blood to theatres.
Winners were announced at Grosvenor House, London last week and judges praised the “robust” system.
