Decision day on the Barton West development
9:30am Tuesday 24th September 2013 in News
A DECISION will be made tonight on Oxford’s biggest development in a generation.
The east area planning committee will meet at the Town Hall, St Aldate’s at 6pm for a special meeting to consider the proposals, which would also involve building a new primary school and shopping area on the 38 hectares of land alongside the existing Barton estate.
City council planning officer Murray Hancock, who has recommended the development for approval, said the plans “demonstrate that the proposed development would possess a scale and appearance that is appropriate to the site and its setting”. But there are fears it would generate too much traffic and cause congestion in the surrounding area.
To tackle these concerns the developer, Barton Oxford LLP – which is made up of the city council and developer Grosvenor – has agreed to pay £16.6m towards the local infrastructure.
Members of the public are welcome to attend the meeting.
