A 123-year-old poem by Dorothy Wordsworth, sister of poet William, has been published for the first time by the Oxford University Press blog.
Permission was granted to Oxford University professor Lucy Newlyn, of St Edmund Hall, to publish the poem, Lines addressed to my kind friend and medical attendant Thomas Carr.
The poem was bought by the Wordsworth Trust at auction in May this year. The organisation allowed Professor Newlyn to publish it as part of her blog post written in connection with her new book, William and Dorothy Wordsworth: All in Each Other.
Dorothy Wordsworth suffered from arteriosclerosis and dementia in her later years. Professor Newlyn said: “This poem was written by Dorothy in her sick room.”
Parts of the poem have been seen before as part of Floating Island at Hawkshead.
