TWO Oxfordshire state schools will be sending their first pupils to Oxbridge in September.

At St Gregory the Great School, Oxford, Hannah Everett and Anna Pinpiro have secured places at the prestigious universities.

Hannah Everett, 18, will study Anglo Saxon, Norse and Celtic languages at Clare College, Cambridge, and Anna Pinpiro, 18, secured a place at Oxford University to read languages.

Hannah, who got an A* in English literature and an A in history and philosophy and ethics, said: “It’s a once in a lifetime kind of thing to study at Cambridge.

“I’ve got a slight feeling of trepidation but I get to study what I want and it’s the only place where you can do it.

“I wanted to do something that was random and interesting.”

Hannah, from Saunders Road, Cowley, said she had been keeping busy waiting for her results to arrive producing Guys and Dolls, which will show at the Pegasus Theatre at the end of the month.

Her sister, Damaris, 21, said: “I’m very proud of my sister but I knew she would do it anyway.”

Headmaster John Hussey said he was “absolutely delighted” with the results.

He said: “Results are up on last year in both attainment and achievement, and I am absolutely delighted for students who have achieved what they have worked so hard for and the parents who have been with them all the way.”

Mr Hussey, who has been headmaster at the school since 2008, said: “A third of our students are going to Russell Group universities, which is a distinct improvement on previous years.”

For The Cooper School in Bicester, its first set of results saw one pupil off to Oxford after getting a perfect 100 per cent score in his physics exam.

He will study physics at Oxford University.

Shaun Bailey, 18, achived the top score of A* in each of his four A-Levels.

He said: “I started getting good grades in physics when I started my A-Levels.

“It was something that comes naturally – I picked a subject I enjoyed.”

Oxfordshire County Council education cabinet member Melinda Tilley said it was “absolutely brilliant” to hear more schools were now sending pupils to the top schools.

She said: “St Gregory’s are really doing well.

“It now needs to set the level.

“When you have got schools that are actually getting them into Oxbridge it does set the bar a lot higher.

“My message is to aspire to those levels.”
