A CYCLIST who died after falling off his bike near Abingdon was named yesterday.

Mark Orchard, 53, of Mons Way, Abingdon, was found lying in Brumcombe Lane, near Bayworth, at about 7.15am on Monday.

After suffering severe head injuries, he was taken to Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital but died on Tuesday.

It is believed he had been cycling downhill from the direction of Boars Hill towards Bayworth.

A spokesman for Oxford coroner’s office said the inquest was opened and adjourned on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, an inquest into the death of a 22-year-old killed in a car crash near Abingdon on Thursday has not yet been opened.

The man has been named locally as Joe Fairhurst, above, from Abingdon. His car swerved off Abingdon Road near Clifton Hampden and hit a tree. Headteacher of John Mason School Di Mashiter said: “It is with great sadness that we heard of the tragic loss of Joe Fairhurst, an ex-student. “This was a young man with an exciting life ahead of him that has been so cruelly cut short.

“The thoughts of everyone at John Mason are with his family and friends at this very difficult time.”
