A cyclist who died after falling off his bike near Abingdon has been named.

Mark Orchard, 53, of Mons Way, Abingdon, was found lying in Brumcombe Lane, near Bayworth, at about 7.15am on Monday.

He was taken to Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital with severe head injuries but died on Tuesday.

It is believed he had been cycling downhill from the direction of Boars Hill towards Bayworth.

Brumcombe Lane was closed for most of Monday for a police accident investigation to be carried out, and police have put up ‘Serious Collision’ signs asking drivers for information.

Retired HGV driver William Broughton, 65, of Bayworth caravan park, said he came out of his house shortly after the accident happened.

He added: “It looks like the cyclist came down the hill, lost control at the bottom, hit the village sign and then went on the verge before coming off his bike in the road.

“There aren’t any potholes in the road at that point — he must have been going too fast.”

A spokesman for Oxford coroner’s office said an inquest was opened and adjourned on Wednesday.
