WOLFSON College in Oxford took a step towards its upcoming 50th anniversary by unveiling a new £4.5m academic wing on Thursday.

The Leonard Wolfson Auditorium, which forms the centrepiece of the new development, was unveiled by Professor Hermione Lee, the Linton Road college’s president.

The development provides a 155-seat lecture hall and performance space, academic offices, and a new foyer and reception area.

Prof Lee said: “This beautiful building will develop Wolfson College’s already very distinctive cultural and academic ethos.

“Wolfson’s academic activities, and its outreach, are thriving, and constantly evolving.”

The project has been paid for by the Wolfson Foundation.

The second phase of the redevelopment will begin in October 2014 and consist of the expansion of the library, a number of new offices, a new lodge, improved disabled access, and a café and exhibition space.

Wolfson, a graduate college, will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2016.
