Three independent county councilors have pledged to work with the Conservative group, giving them overall control of Oxfordshire County Council.

One of them, Les Sibley, is a former Labour stalwart, who decided to stand at county council election on May 2 as an independent.

The elections left the Conservatives one short of an overall majority with 31 of the 63 seats. Four independent councillors were elected along with 15 Labour councillors, 11 Liberal Democrats and two Greens.

The three independent councillors who have agreed to support an administration with the Conservative group are Wallingford county councillor Lynda Atkins, Bicester West county councillor Les Sibley and Benson and Cholsey county councillor Mark Gray.

The other independent county councillor is Didcot Ladygrove’s Neville Harris.

Ian Hudspeth, leader of Oxfordshire County Council's Conservative group, said: "It was essential that we formed a stable administration to give direction and purpose to the county council looking forward to the period 2013-2017. "
