OXFORD United fans were put through their paces at the team’s training ground as part of a new health programme.

Footie Fitness is a free weekly session designed to get Oxfordshire men off the couch and on to playing fields.

Overweight men could even be referred by their GP to take part.

The 90-minute workouts are run at the club’s training ground in Roman Way, and are a partnership between United and SUBWAY.

They are paid for with a Heart Research UK Healthy Heart Grant.

Engineer James Godfrey was one who took part in the brutal first session.

The 22-year-old Oxford resident said: “It was great. They had us in the gym doing circuits, and using the medicine ball, then had us out on the field.

“Doing that made simple tasks like playing really hard, and it was a solid workout.

“I didn’t manage to score but had great laugh.

“I’m a U’s fan so it was great to see that side, and the facilities are top-notch.

“It was a lot of fun and I would recommend it.”
