A FIRE has destroyed Cycle King in Cowley Road.

The roof has collapsed and firefighters are expected to take down the gables to make the property safe.

Witnesses reported seeing the doors being blown off and flames of 15 feet rising from the roof.

The shop, which has been in Cowley Road for about 13 years, had several hundred bikes inside at the time.

But no one was injured and police do not think the cause is arson, said Inspector Claire Storry.

Cowley Road remains closed between Jeune Street and Princes Street. Shops have been closed.

The fire service was called at 7.39am this morning to the fire, which started in the showroom of Cycle King and quickly engulfed the upper floors.

Eight fire engines and a total of about 70 firefighters and officers tackled the blaze.

The fire service is expecting to be at the scene until at least Tuesday and one lane of Cowley Road could be opened later today, if the area is safe to do so.
