CRIME author Ruth Rendell was given a warm welcome to the Sheldonian Theatre in chilly Oxford yesterday.
The successful writer and Labour peer was in town for the Oxford Literary Festival She took part in a debate about the use of shame in writing, and spoke about The Child’s Child, a new crime novel written under her pen name of Barbara Vine.
Baroness Rendell, pictured with Peter Kemp, chief fiction reviewer for The Sunday Times, said: “It’s a very nice festival but it’s a shame it’s so cold.
“I always have lovely audiences in Oxford but it really is so cold.”
Her most famous character is Chief Inspector Wexford, and the latest in the series about him, The Vault, was published in 2011.
