School’s science park ‘boost’

County councillor Mike Badcock County councillor Mike Badcock

ABINGDON School has unveiled plans for its new £15m science centre in Faringdon Road.

The three-storey building will be the first of its kind in the Albert Park conservation area.

All of the school’s 925 pupils will be able to benefit from the 21 new teaching laboratories for physics, biology and chemistry.

The new block will be built on top of the school’s current coach parking spaces, with a new road entrance moved closer to the junction with Bath Street to the east, which some worried might result in a build-up of traffic at peak times.

County councillor Mike Badcock said: “This is a big investment in education, with state-of-the-art facilities. The only issue I had is that traffic might need to be managed better in the morning.”

Headteacher Felicity Lusk said: “It will be a tremendous boost to the teaching facilities.”

I just hope it's not as much of an unsightly eyesore as the new sports facility which looms over Bath Street.

Hmm, lots of morning and afternoon traffic there. Time to put in some real bike lanes, reduce the road speed to 20 mph (30 kph) and remove the white line to make the road a shared space that handles cyclists far better than now.

Why is the county councillor in this report not trying to get something like this for the three state schools in Abingdon?
