FORMER Lord Mayor Alan Armitage has been ruled out as a candidate for the Liberal Democrats in the May county council elections.

Last month Mr Armitage, city councillor for North ward, was found by the city council’s standards committee to have breached the councillors’ code of conduct after he was accused of making an inappropriate remark to a schoolgirl at a sports event in June last year. Following the decision, he admitted he may have used the word ‘sexy’ and resigned as Lord Mayor.

Now, Oxford West and Abingdon Liberal Democrats, the constituency party, has revealed that Mr Armitage has not been selected as its candidate to contest the St Margaret’s division in the county council elections on Thursday, May 2. Education expert Prof John Howson has been selected as the Liberal Democrat candidate for the division.

The city council Liberal Democrat group met last Monday to discuss whether Mr Armitage should face further disciplinary action from the party it was agreed that Mr Armitage should be given a verbal warning.
