A WHOLE garden in a wheelbarrow.

That is what children across Oxfordshire were challenged with creating and what celebrity gardener Diarmuid Gavin dropped in to oversee.

The TV personality visited Millet’s Farm in Frilford, near Abingdon, on Sunday to chat to youngsters about recycling waste and how gardens are about more than just flowers.

Pupils from Stanford in the Vale Primary School stood out with their efforts, having grown vegetables using compost from school canteen waste Year 2 pupil Oliver Braddy, seven, said: “It was great, it was really fun to meet Diarmuid and he was really impressed with us.

“We make our own compost at the school. He loved that and was well happy with our wheelbarrow. We all had loads of fun.”

Teacher Sue Finney added: “We are big on green. We have a compost bin and anything wasted from the kitchen goes in there. The children definitely learned a lot.”

Despite being there to judge the best wheelbarrow contest, Mr Gavin said he couldn’t decide which school to choose and all who entered were awarded gardening packs.
