Knife-wielding Benson pub raiders jailed for 20 years

KNIFE-WIELDING masked burglars tied up and blindfolded a pub chef before threatening to slit his throat in a terrifying night time raid.

Benjamin Sinclair and Thomas Somarakis were yesterday sentenced to a total of 20 years in prison for the crimes at the Three Horseshoes pub in Benson.

The thieves were arrested after they fled the 17th century pub in a stolen car, leading police on an 80mph chase before the pair crashed, flipping the vehicle on to its roof.

Last night, their victim Daniel Merritt told the Oxford Mail he thought he was going to die in the attack, which happened last July. Sinclair, 23, and Somarakis, 21, smashed through a kitchen window before arming themselves with knives and black tape, Reading Crown Court heard.

The pair, bandanas covering their faces, burst into 22-year-old Mr Merritt’s bedroom at about 2.30am. His arms were then bound and his eyes covered with tape.

After searching the pub they tied their prisoner to a chair and demanded cash.

Lesley Bates, prosecuting, said Sinclair held his knife to Mr Merritt’s throat and said: “Don’t make me slit your throat.”

She said: “He was angry and threatened Mr Merritt causing him to fear he would be very seriously hurt, if not killed, if he did not comply.”

The chef was punched in the face and stamped on, the court heard. The raiders left their victim tied up, stealing cash from the till, a laptop and a sports bag. They found the keys to a Suzuki Vitara behind the bar and drove off.

At 3.40am a police officer saw the car speeding on the A4074 and drove at 80mph to catch it.

But the getaway car crashed and rolled down a bank. The pair ran from the wreckage but were arrested near Wallingford Bridge.

Mr Merritt was found taped to the chair by a police officer patrolling the area later that night.

Peter Du Feu, defending Sinclair, said his client was going to use his prison time “constructively” to become a “better person”.

Abigail Husbands, defending Somarakis, said her client had taken ketamine before the raid, adding: “There was no sophistication or organisation in this offence.”

Judge Bruce McIntyre, sentencing, said: “You committed dreadful offences.

“You broke into his home where he was entitled to feel safe. You tied him up with tape, you tied him so he couldn’t move, you tied him so he couldn’t see.

“You had him in fear for his life. And perhaps most chilling of all, you seemed to find the whole thing amusing.”

Both were guilty of aggravated burglary, false imprisonment, possession of a blade and aggravated vehicle taking.

Sinclair was convicted after a three-day trial in December but Somorakis pleaded guilty. Sinclair, of Blue Mountains, Wallingford, was sentenced to 12 years and banned from driving for five. Somarakis, of Radnor Road, Wallingford, was jailed for eight years and banned from driving for four.

Investigating officer Det Con Paul Reece said: “This was a very nasty incident which had a profound and long lasting effect on the victim.”

DANIEL Merritt thought his throat would be sliced open if he moved a millimetre when the knife was held against his neck, Reading Crown Court heard.
In a victim impact statement the chef described the raid as “the worst experience of his entire life” and said he had never been so scared.

He said: “I felt a knife being held to my throat. I thought one sideways movement, even a millimetre or two, would slice my throat open.”

The 22-year-old, who worked and lived above the pub  before the attack, has suffered from depression since. The court heard he had been sacked by pub manager Glenn Walker as he struggled to return to work.

Prosecutor Lesley Bates said: “At some stage he was dismissed from his position which not only left him out of work but also homeless.”

The court also heard that when asked why he had sacked his head chef, Mr Walker said: “Who I employed has nothing to do with the court.”

And Miss Bates said: “He said there were issues with his standard of work.”

After the hearing, Mr Merritt said he was “very happy” with the sentences.

Mr Walker was not available for comment last night.

Absolutely dispicable what the two lads did but what a repulsive and vile man Glenn Walker sounds like.
The poor bloke Mr Merritt takes an absolute hiding and was in (real) fear for his life so what does the scumbag do - sack him! Mr Merritt deserves a pay rise and be put up in accomodation he feels safe in, not fired. I hope Glenn Walker has a few sleepless nights to consider his actions.

Three Horseshoes pub in Benson ;

That's one Pub I won't be visiting, Mr Walker had the opportunity to put the public straight if the perception of him being a heartless individual is incorrect.

Shame justice can,t be done on Glenn Walker. Best we can hope for is that people do boycott the nasty little man's business and hurt him where it matters his pocket

Just for everyone's information you are mad if you believe the papers. I would like to make it clear Danny's standards of work was atrocious before the incident and he had numerous warnings the incident was nothing to do with the loss of job. I would also like to point out Glenn walker has not spoken to a single reporter and therefore what's written in the report is utter rubbish and untrue statements. Anyone that believes the paper has no Brain! Having worked there I no that Glenn supported him by giving him countless paid days off.

Unfair Mr Walker is getting a pounding here people, this is'nt about him, Very Sad that the lad lost his job but Mr walker was'nt on trial and right or wrong our personal thoughts for dismissing Mr Merritt is nothing to do with the case. We should focus more on the disgusting animals that did this in the first place.I think justice was done and HOPE the license loss is when they get out of prison ????

I think this is completely out of order mr Merritt is a kind and down to earth man I think it's unfair this happened to him .. He is a hard worker has never done anything wrong to anyone and little druggies think its acceptable to kidnap people they have got what they deserve . And as for the boss of the pub you need to really think about the way you treat your staff

I am proud that Glenn Walker is part of our loving family and it makes me sad that he is being judged by people who do not know him. It's about the people who committed this dreadful crime NOT about Glenn who is an excellent boss to all his staff & a loving husband & father.

To say that Danny is a bad working is utter rubbish I have seen him in his workplace several times and he is an excellent worker I have eaten food prepared by him in a top rate restaurant and enjoyed every mouthful he is hygienic and a good team player the fact that he was let go from his job does bear no witness to this attack but I'm glad that it has been highlighted what a heartless person his employer is. If Danny was such a bad worker then why was he kept in his job until the incident and not fired before hand there is two reasons to boycott this pub from both sides either A he sacked someone for being attacked or he employed and kept in employment a sub Standerd worker and knowing Danny I truly believe its A!!! ****

Having also worked along side Danny, I can say that these allegations about his hygiene are untrue. He is a very hard worker always wanting to learn and to achieve to the best of his ability. He is committed to any job that is set in front off him.
I do agree that a lot of attention is being placed on the pub owner instead of the monsters who stared this all off. However I do believe that the situation is more complicated than anyone really knows and that people should not judge anyone unless they know the whole situation. Danny has done very well to overcome all these obstacles and challenges that have been brought on by this attack and by the pub owner. I wish him every luck in the future, hoping that everyone who has stood in his way, will have consequences for their actions.

Also know danny really well and i know that mr walker didnt treat him fairly. i think everyone who is writring about how danny is a bad person take a step back and think there are 2 sides to every story. and if mr walker was such a "caring" person why did he not give danny the help he needed after the attack. because maybe he is not a "caring" person. and not once did he attened the court at any stage. and not make any enquirys to how it went. after all it was his pub

I don't know the parties involved but as an outsider if Daniel was trusted to be left alone in charge of the place at night, because clearly there was no one else there as this duo of untermensch smashed about, then he can't have been the catastrophe portrayed by his detractors above. So , the landlord trusted him. Therefore he was OK, so shut up.

I have worked for Glenn Walker for a number of years and know him on a personal and professional level. I can honestly say that all the derogatory remarks about him could not be further from the truth.
I think it might be worth pointing out that when this horrendous attack occured Glenn did try to help Danny and gave him the time off that he needed. Danny repaid this gesture by going out drinking (perhaps understandable given the attack on him) However, when Glenn became aware of this he accepted it and allowed Danny more time off to go to court. Danny again chose to go out drinking and did not go to court. Please bear in mind that all the while Danny was being paid for the pleasure...
With regards to the comments about Danny's level of work, having eaten his food and worked alongside him, anyone who truly knows him would easily accept that he is lazy and was carried by all the kitchen workers and staff working alongside him.

Look Anna, if he was as bad as you say then he wouldn't have been left in sole charge of the premises by any landlord/boss who could be REMOTELY described as" responsible". You can't have it both ways: why leave him in charge if he's completely untrustworthy?

Oh Anna 87 "the truth" you should check facts first before posting.
Danny did attend court all three days. I went with him and we were driven there by Thames Valley Police each day. Mark was there on day 1.
Danny was not drinking he had been signed off work and on medication by Dr at Millstream surgery. He was living with us at the time.

In passing Sinclair got 7 years in 2008 for attacking a crippled boy with an iron bar. Here he has only got half as much again as Somarakis for maintaining a wholly meretricious defence in the face of overwhelming evidence. Judges might occasionally be reminded that creatures like him SHOULD be given life sentences because they can be pulled back in again each time they become unstable-hopefully before they can kill, which is undoubtedly what Sinclair is programmed to do. I hope I'm not proved right, but I have a very bad feeling.

Good, I'm glad these 2 are inside now.

Always have caused trouble around Didcot, let’s just hope the police catch up with the rest of the trouble makers that used to go around with this Sinclair and put them inside too. That will surely cut the violent crime down in Didcot massively!! Horrible lot that don’t deserve the air they breathe!!

Agree with you Diddyman and glad to get this focused back on the nasty animals that did this, rather than the pub owner ( although i agree with all that his timing of sacking was pretty inapropriate and thoughtless ) but these lads that tortured the poor boy sicken me. And sentance should have been longer.

As a customer of the pub I feel that certain facts have been ignored. The facts are that the robbery occurred in late july and Mr Merritt was dismissed in mid December. His food was hit and miss sometimes good but often poor. But that is not the point, Glenn has been portrait as the villain get a grip people he is a small businessman trying to protect his business and the other staff he employs.

The Herald is quite becoming a typical tabloid with its misleading headlines. drawing you in when in fact it's not what you read in the title ATALL, I read it the same way thinking they got 20 years, but they got nothing really,They will be out in half that time anyway.
