Developers ask if stadium can be demolished

DEVELOPERS hoping to replace Oxford Stadium with housing are investigating whether or not they need permission to demolish it.

Planning agent Savills, acting on behalf of Galliard Homes, has made an application to determine whether approval is required for the method of demolition and redevelopment of site for residential use.

The company is also expected to resubmit plans for 225 homes on the site.

The city council last week confirmed an initial planning bid had been rejected outright because it had been received with details missing.

Savills spokesman Andrew Sparrow said the company would be submitting plans “soon” but would not give a timeframe.

Plans for homes have been widely opposed by supporters of the stadium, which stopped operating as a dog racing venue on December 29 after 73 years.

Campaigners want to see it continue to be used as a leisure facility and are supported by the council.
