Watercolours? No, just water for this artist

WATER might not sound like something you could make art from, but Catherine Watson can prove otherwise.

She uses H2O to create 3D works of art and uses it to look at our understanding of nature.

One of her works of art consists of a transparent shape filled with water vapour, while another one is simply a kilogram of water.

The artist in residence at The Old Fire Station in George Street, Oxford, said: “Nowadays we have an immense technological capacity to measure things – to see huge distances as well as deep inside the world. In this exhibition I have been playing with the idea that data can tell you what the world is.

“Measurement is only one way of knowing something – in many ways it is only assigning something an arbitrary equivalent or value.”

The exhibition, entitled Artificial Standard, is at the Old Fire Station as part of the Oxfordshire Science Festival, which runs until March 24. Artificial Standard closes on March 29.
