STAFF from RAF Benson smiled through the pain as they pulled a 20-tonne steam engine to raise funds for Comic Relief.

The team of about 20 engineers and aircrew from RAF Benson’s 230 Squadron – known as the Tigers – pulled the engine about 100 metres along the track at Wallingford railway station on Saturday.

They were aiming to raise between £500 and £1,000 from donations on the day, and from staff donations on the base.

Sgt Richard ‘Ronnie’ Barker, 25, wore a tiger suit for the challenge. He said: “Pulling Ivor the Engine was harder than expected but we are pleased to have raised over £800 for local charities through Comic Relief.”
