Zumbathon to raise cash for carnival coffers

A ZUMBA dance party is the latest fundraiser in aid of this year’s Cowley Road Carnival.
The popular event, which has attracted 30,000 people, is returning to Cowley Road following a two-year absence.
The 11th annual carnival, taking place on Sunday, July 7, will need between £50,000 and £90,000, and organisers say they expect the carnival to take place even though they have only raised about £2,000 so far.
Hosted by Oxford-based dance instructor George Martini, a Zumbathon will be held on Sunday, March 24, at Blackbird Leys Leisure Centre, from 2-5pm.
The Latin-inspired dance exercise originated in Miami and Mr Martini is a well-known instructor.
Karen David, a trustee of Cowley Road Works, the charity organising the carnival, said: “The Zumba Party is a fantastic way to bring people together in support of carnival. We are in talks with various bodies regarding funding and support.”
Doors open at 1.15pm for Zumbathon registration, which will cost £10 for over-16s, and £5 for children aged eight to 15.
All proceeds will go towards the carnival.
