Teen's clothing examined for DNA, Old Bailey hears

A SCIENTIST has told the Old Bailey there is less than a one in a billion chance DNA found in a 14-year-old's underwear did not come from men accused of involvement in a sex exploitation gang.

Unnamed complainant known as Girl 5 claims she had sex between the ages of 12 and 14 with Assad and Mohammed Hussain and Zeeshan and Billal Ahmed.

Only Bilal Ahmed has denied having sex with the girl. The others say they did not know her age.

Police sent away Girl 5's underwear for tests in June and December 2011.

Janet Manners, a forensics scientist at LGC Foreniscs in Culham, told the court a thong she examined in June 2011 tested positive for semen from Zeeshan Ahmed.

She said the "full" DNA profile match meant there was a less than a one in one billion probability the sample came from someone unrelated to the defendant.

The forensics scientist of 38 years also said DNA from Mohammed and Assad Hussain was found in the teen's underwear from December 2011. She said there was also a less than one in a billion chance semen found was not from Assad Hussain or someone related to him.

And she said the DNA found matching Mohammed Hussain's had a one in a 9.2 million probability of not coming from him or someone related to him.

The scientist also said she could not prove the DNA came from Mohammed Hussain's semen.

She said: "It is likely it is from semen but I cannot definitely say that."

The jury were shown photographs of the underwear.

All nine men accused of running a child sex ring deny all 79 charges.

The trial continues.
