Abingdon regiment to be disbanded

AN ABINGDON regiment is to be disbanded as part of the Government’s plans to restructure the Armed Services.

Dalton Barracks based 12 Logistic Support Regiment will disband and 3 Logistic Support Regiment will move and be replaced by 27 Theatre Logistic Regiment from Aldershot.

Overall troop numbers will be reduced in Abingdon.

In Bicester, two new regiments will move into St David’s Barracks.

The future of the base has been unclear since last year when the Government announced 23 Pioneer Regiment would be disbanded.

By 2016, 1 Close Support Regiment, returning from Germany, will move to the base, and 241 Signal Squadron will also move into the same barracks by 2014.

Investment in accommodation and technical facilities for troops will also be made at the base.

As someone said on the bus the other day Jack, UKIP if you want to, but I'm staying awake! As for this and the previous Labour governments running down the Armed Forces, since the apparent 'end of the Cold War' there has objectively been less need for the numbers to be retained - not just the cost of employing military and civilian personnel, but also the cost of maintaining bases and equipment - all being funded by tax payers money. On the other hand, getting rid of what you might need seems short-sighted - or does the Government intend to privatise everything and use more 'agencies' like Group4, or maybe sub-contract defence to cost-effective foreign countries, such as India?

The MOD has only itself to blame, along with previous Govts (of all colours), as since the 60s and 70s they have wasted zillions on a wide assortment of botched projects, poorly costed and vastly overbudget developments. They should have been reined in and properly held to account years ago.
