Community out in force for annual spring clean

LITTER-pickers with high-visibility vests were out in force in Oxford as people turned out to give their areas of the city a spring clean.

The event on Saturday was co-ordinated by OxClean and backed by the Oxford Mail’s sister paper The Oxford Times.

Saturday was the second day of the event, which last year saw 127 separate groups getting involved in tidying up their local areas. Among the areas targeted was Old Marston.

Elaine Bennett, 50, from Marston Road, was part of the clean-up team.

She said: “It was great to be part of the community spirit within Marston and help to keep it a tidy and pleasant place to live.”

A wide range of different groups and organisations took part in tidy-ups, including residents’ associations, schools, cyclists, community action groups and associations, parish councils, colleges, theatres, scouts and allotment associations.

OxClean is an initiative from Oxford Civic Society, which aims to keep Oxford clean and tidy all year round, working in partnership with Oxford City Council and local community groups.

Well done! But can't help feeling that those on Jobseekers Allowance should be doing it all year round.

Well done! But can't help feeling it's the dozy biscuits in their cars who wind their windows and chuck out their litter on the roadside that should be the target all year round.

Was better when City Council Council provided gloves, pick-sticks, the correct bags for different rubbish, and collected the bags. Nor did rhe Oxford Civic Society handle the publicity very well again, and failed to contact the local Environment Champions across Oxford - the volunteers who work tirelessly throughout the rest of the year helping with recycling and environment issues.
