Homes plan near Grove sparks flood fears
12:00pm Friday 22nd February 2013 in News
RESIDENTS have spoken out against plans for almost 1,000 new houses on land north of Grove.
Council leaders have earmarked the site near Monks Farm, between Grove village and Williams F1, for up to 900 homes.
Liberal Democrat county councillor and Grove resident Zoe Patrick said: “It is totally inappropriate land to be developed, right by the flood plain in the village. If it causes more flooding it would be a great concern.”
Residents say that run-off water from developments along the Letcombe Brook is worsening flooding.
John Divall, 73, of the Green in Grove, is part of the Grove Green Flood Group.
He said: “When it rains the water level in the brook rises much higher than it used to. We are concerned about this development.”
The application by developers Gallagher Estates and Gleeson Homes acknowledged the site was “within an area at risk of flooding” but the Environment Agency said it had no objections on flood risk grounds.

Of course you are and just where do you want new homes built.
When it rains where I live....it comes through the walls.

Water is higher in the brook than it used to be when it rains (hardly evidence for not allowing more homes for those that need them!...............
unfortunately there are some of us living in truely substandard accommodation where the damp patches and mould really are so bad that when it rains outside, the water comes through the walls.
I have yet to read of any supporters of any residential schemes or new homes anywhere.
All we hear is ...'yes we know we need new housing but just not in my back yard' 'not near me...I'm alright mate...tough s..t on those of you in need of homes' and of course we have all those people living in properties too big for their needs on social housing rents who won't move to somewhere smaller....
We have an ever increasing population of old and new, people have to accept housing needs to be built, or indeed reduce breeding or limit the number's of homes/bedrooms one person is entitled to.
The current situation is unsustainable .

Of course flooding needs to be dealt with. Maybe having a front garden at every house, protected by a brick wall, instead of a tarmac drive, would help.
