Jobseekers' Allowance claims rise in Oxfordshire again

The number of people signing on the dole in Oxfordshire has risen for the second month in a row, bucking the national trend.

Figures from the Office of National Statistics show 6,842 people claimed Jobseeker’s Allowance in January, a rise of 280 on the previous month.

But nationally the claimant count fell for the third month in a row, down by 12,500 to 1.54 million, the lowest since June 2011 following a huge increase in employment.

Unemployment, including those not eligible for benefit, fell by 14,000 in the final quarter of last year to 2.5 million — 156,000 lower than a year ago.

Why do they bother publishing these figures. They are meaningless, when the government keep changing the rules as to who can and can't claim a certain benefit. How about we go back to pre-1979 counting, and just say how many people are out of work, that is the figure that matters.

I'm not surprised that the number of jobseekers are up, every other person in Oxford seems to be East European.

Its time to recognise that overpopulation is the cause of most of the worlds ills.

There are statistics, and damned statistics. The government is desperate to show the economy growing, and employment going up. Unfortunately, reality is very different, for those unable to get full time hours, though supposedly in employment.

No matter the numbers of Eastern Europeans, unemployment is no better, even without them. Some of these people are here as students, helping create work.

Correct, but the overpopulation of Oxford is caused by people born hundreds and thousands of miles away, a little backwater town such as ours cannot cope with that influx, with a council that buries it's head in the sand when it comes to housing an employment for those that it attracts.

I accept that two percent may be students, but fifty percent are car washers and the others just sit in Costa Coffee all day. 98% of them on housing benefit, jobseeker allowance....family allowance, you name it they know it. Rest assured....they are only here for their benefit , not ours
