Teenager arrested after sex assault at railway station
9:30am Saturday 16th February 2013 in News
A MAN was seriously sexually assaulted at Oxford Railway Station.
British Transport Police (BTP) arrested a 19-year-old man from Reading yesterday in connection with the incident, believed to have taken place at around 2am on Sunday.
The 24-year-old victim was sexually assaulted at the entrance forecourt of the station, which nearly six million people pass through each year. An investigation is ongoing.
BTP spokesman Simon Letouze said: “We have seized CCTV from the station and surrounding area and it is being viewed. This type of incident is incredibly rare.
“Officers carried out visits to the location following the incident to speak to passengers and staff. A man is currently in custody and police are speaking to him.”
Regular station users said they were shocked by the incident.
A station taxi driver of 15 years, Bob Bevan, said: “We’re well covered with CCTV here and as soon as something happens the police are on the scene, but still, you don’t expect to hear about something like that happening on your doorstep.”
Oxford student Harriet Young, 19, of Headington, said: “I would never walk around here at night. If I’m using the station I get into a taxi straight away. What a horrible thing to happen.”
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact BTP on 0800 405040.
