CENTRE Henry Lamont scored a brace of tries as Oxford University made it two out of two this term with a 21-14 win over the Royal Navy at the United Services Ground in Portsmouth last night.

It followed last week’s away victory over the Army.

Lamont put the Dark Blues ahead on 15 minutes with his first try, converted by Charlie Marr.

The Navy hit back hard, scoring twice through Marlin and McArdle, Dave Pascoe’s two conversions giving them a 14-7 half-time lead.

With the elements behind them after the break, the students were soon level thanks to Lamont’s second try, converted by Marr, following a fine move involving both forwards and backs.

Sam Egerton moved from scrum half to centre and completed the scoring in the 55th minute, slicing through the cover for Marr to convert.

* OXFORD University joined Oxfordshire in the National Under 20 Shield quarter-finals after a 15-12 victory over Warwickshire at Iffley Road.

The students finished second in Pool 2 behind Oxon, who lost their final match 14-0 to Staffordshire.

Oxfordshire will host Leicestershire in their quarter-final on April 7, with the Oxford University visiting Durham.

The students led 15-0 at half-time against Warwickshire, thanks to tries from flanker Henry Hughes, hooker Will Darby and scrum-half Matt Shorthose.

But they had to withstand a Warwickshire fightback to hold on to victory.
