New site to recycle old electricals

BROKEN electrical goods can now be disposed of safely in Cowley at a new recycling bin.

As part of Oxford City Council’s Cleaner Greener Cowley campaign, a new pink ‘WEEE bank’ has been put in Hockmore Street.

WEEE stands for Waste, Electronic and Electrical Equipment such as kettles, toasters and mobile phones.

Cleaner Greener Oxford executive board member John Tanner said: "Cowley residents will be in the pink when they want to get rid of a broken electric toothbrush or burnt-out hairdryer. Just look out for the pink recycling bin.

“These days all electrical items can be recycled.

“When you buy a new TV, the shop should take away your old one.

“But if you are stuck with larger electric items, such as televisions, fridges and washing machines, you can take them to the Redbridge recycling centre.”

There are now 18 pink electrical recycling banks around Oxford.

Others include Cardigan Street, Jericho; Blackbird Leys Road; St Nicholas Road, Littlemore; and Townsend Square, Donnington Bridge Road.

County banks include waste recycling centres at Alkerton, Ardley, Stanton Harcourt, Drayton, Crowmarsh and Stanford in the Vale.
