Ninth show for hospice raises £70k

TWO nights of comedy and music have drawn to a close – and raised in the region of £70,000 for Helen and Douglas House.

Childish Things was back at Oxford’s New Theatre for a ninth year on Tuesday and Wednesday, boasting a line up including comedians Rob Brydon and Al Murray.

Fundraisers Lizzie Pickering and Kate Day organised the two almost sell-out nights at the theatre in George Street.

Ms Pickering said: “My own son Harry died at Helen House and I know what a difference that money makes because it is mainly going on one-to-one care. “£70,000 will make a huge difference to help pay for that.”

Harry, who had muscle-wasting disease Spinal Muscular Atrophy, died aged six in November 2000.

Helen House, the world’s first children’s hospice, opened in East Oxford in 1982 and Douglas House, for young adults, opened in 2004.

Tickets for next year’s Childish Things on Monday, March 24 and Tuesday, March 25, at New Theatre Oxford have already gone on sale.
