PRINCE Charles joked he could have picked up some tips as he officially opened a business school’s new wing yesterday.

The Prince of Wales took the time to speak to students, staff and supporters during a tour of the Said Business School – and sat in on a lecture – before unveiling a plaque to mark the occasion.

The £36m Said Business School opened in 2001. It was developed following a £20m donation to the university by Arab businessman Wafic Said.

The £28m new wing – which includes three lecture theatres, classrooms and meeting rooms – has been used by the business school in Frideswide Square since September.

Prince Charles told the audience: “I want to say what an enormous pleasure it is to join you all here this afternoon.

“And really to congratulate Wafic Said.

“We owe him an enormous debt of gratitude.”

Referring to his own biscuit business, Duchy Originals, Prince Charles said: “I realise now that when I started my little food business 21 years ago with one biscuit, I should have come here first.

“I might have picked up some useful hints.”

Mr Said said: “Thank you for your wonderful words.

“It has long been my dream to show you the school and its latest additions.

“The school brings together your long-standing interest in higher education and architecture.”

Professor Peter Tufano, the school’s dean, said: “It was a great honour to welcome His Royal Highness to Said Business School and to show him the important work we are doing here to research and teach business.”

He added: “This new building is a fabulous asset to us.”

Prince Charles accepted two gifts from the school – a silver box and honey from beehives at the school.

Professor Andrew Hamilton, vice chancellor of the University of Oxford, said: “We were absolutely delighted. Prince Charles was charming and we were thrilled that he graced us here to open our new Said Business School wing.”
