Judge Christopher Compston, who was thought to be the longest-serving circuit judge in England, retired yesterday.
Courtroom One at Oxford Crown Court was packed with well-wishers as the popular judge was given a rousing send-off.
He was a barrister for 20 years before he became a circuit judge in 1986.
During his judicial career, the 71-year-old, who has written two books, sat in civil, criminal and family cases, and also served on the Mental Health Review Tribunal.
