AN OXFORD activist alleged to have made homophobic comments has stood down from her position in UKIP.

Dr Julia Gasper, formerly chairman of the Oxford branch of the party, is alleged to have called gay rights a “lunatics charter” in an online members’ forum.

Last week the party press office said her status in the party was “under review”.

But yesterday spokesman Gawain Towler said: “Dr Gasper is no longer chair of the Oxford branch of UKIP.”

He added: “I have been told that a resignation was offered and accepted.”

Dr Gasper, who contested the Oxford East seat for the party at the last General Election, refused to comment when contacted by the Oxford Mail and asked the paper to stop calling her.

Her comments were revealed on January 12 after a national newspaper investigation.
