Protest plan over Assange speech

Protests are expected outside the Oxford Union tomorrow after organisers invited Wikileaks founder Julian Assange as a guest speaker.

Mr Assange, currently claiming political asylum inside the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, will appear via videolink as part of an awards ceremony on whistleblowing.

The protests are being organised by Simone Webb, president of the Oxford University LGBTQ society (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer) over the fact that he is wanted for extradition to Sweden over rape allegations.

Actor Sir Patrick Stewart was due to speak at the debating club last night.

Are they protesting because he is accused, is not facing the accusations or... other?

Really clearly written article, not at all ambiguous.

So what if he speaks? You'd think the LGBTQ Society would know all about wanting to be heard and expressing your views and being understood even.

I think it's because he couldn't be a**ed to waste months in Sweden while their coppers dealt with the allegations (actually, if they've got enough evidence to charge, then charge for goodness sake, what's all the winceying around? And if they haven't, drop it-now) That would be the left's take on it, I think, though he has had the support of some of the luvvies. Never mind, Simone, it's all grist to your CV and in 8 years time you'll be the CEO of a mid-size charity. Won't the Pony Club girls be excited!

Nice to know that this organisation believes in free speech. I will remember that the next time they are whining when someone is sacked, refused entry etc for their sexuality.

I do so hope both the reporter and editor embrace this opportunity to review ambiguous antecedents with their faculty advisor.
