WEST Oxfordshire District Council has opened community sandbag points today as 13 flood alerts and one flood warning are in place for the county.

The council gives out the sandbags free of charge when there is an imminent risk of flooding.

Motorists are also being warned that Lower Road in Islip is closed due to flooding and there is surface water on a number of other roads including the B4022 at Hailey.

Flood boards have been place at the following locations by Oxfordshire County Council’s highways crews: The B4022 at Hailey; Main Road in North Newington; Fox Lane in Wootton, Abingdon; Witheridge Hill in Stoke Road; Oxford Road, Horspath; B4020 Shilton Road, Burford; B4000 south of Watchfield and Lower Road in Eynsham.

Drivers are being urged by the county council to drive very carefully through water and obey any road closed signs.

A total of 13 flood alerts – meaning flooding is possible – have been issued for waterways in the county.
