BLIND judo champion Ian Rose showed his medals to pupils as he opened a new building at a Blackbird Leys primary school.

Mr Rose, a winner of two Paralympic, five World Championship, and nine European Championship Medals, joined a special assembly for Windale Community Primary School before cutting the ribbon on Friday.

Eye cancer left him partially blind when he was six months old, but he told the children it had been no barrier to success.

Mr Rose said: “I’ve had a perfect day. I took the assembly and talked about confidence and aspirations, and showed some of the children the medals that I won and what can be achieved if you set your mind to a challenge.”

The new building features two classrooms, a resource area, a DT room with cookers, and a new staff room. School manager Jane Burd said it was to accommodate the growing school, which became two-form entry, and will have two classes in each year from Foundation to Year Six.
