Police officers claim 'Christmas cancelled'

THE body representing police officers in the Thames Valley claims Christmas has been “cancelled” after the force made shift changes at short notice.

Thames Valley Police has changed officer shifts on Christmas Eve from 2pm-10pm to 8pm-4am and officers will have to clock back on shift at 3pm.

The Police Federation claims the change contravenes regulations which require at least 90 days’ notice.

Thames Valley Police said it would look into the issue.

Assistant Chief Constable John Campbell said: “We must ensure we have the right number of officers on duty at the right times to provide the best service to the public.

“The welfare of officers is always a consideration when we have to make changes and we do all we can to minimise disruption as well as ensuring changes are in line with police regulations.”

Not obvious why it's a good time to start clocking off at 10pm when the trouble starts at 1 am when the drunks have been in the clubs a few hours.
But maybe it'd make better sense for the clubs not even to open that night and pubs to close at 11pm. Let the drunken riff raff go home and upset their families instead of making the City a miserable place on that particular night.

Looks like between 2 and 10pm Christmas Eve is the time to commit crime then if shifts have been moved back. Assume its a move to avoid paying overtime. I wonder how many senior officers will be doing those sort of shifts over Christmas

Same old, same old. TVP work schedules are baffling at the best of times, so this doesn't come as a shock - though I'm guessing the spanking new Police Commissioner (?) may wish to call-in the decision, and probably have a little chat with the Chief Constable over a frothy coffee with ginger nuts - though hopefully not at one of those horrid multi-national coffee cafes which
apparently spend more on tax-avoidance consultants, than paying the Inland Revenue ...... to help pay to maintain our Police, and the new PCCs.

Janet J, the force staffing over any given period regardless of whether it is a bank holiday is maintained using a core of senior officers. Are you suggesting that you would be happy to pay senior officers overtime for the sake of it?

There will still be 24 hour cover, 365 days a year, even if shift times are changed. They will not leave blank gaps in cover.

Can't say I've much sympathy for yet another union moan from the police.

I called 101 too report a mail scam yesterday and was told (rudely) not to bother the police but to take the problem to bank security instead.

When I feel I can trust my local police I might have some sympathy for their problems.

No change there Lord P. They have always vanished (with their Kebabs) back to the station before kicking out time leaving us to clear the city on our own without any protection. Great pay, Great Pension, early retirement, and they moan about having to actually do some work. I wish that I could swap jobs. 60 hours+ per week, NO sick pay, NO holiday pay, NO pension, NO retirement full stop, let alone early. Any copper out there want to trade jobs.

Well you have to use your head. Everyone knows about mail/email/phone scams and since they originate from abroad 99.99% of the time, there is practically nothing that can be done.

You say you don't trust your local police, but I bet you any money if someone was threatening you or damaging your property, they'd be the first people you call upon.

Respect the Police, they do a good job, and were it not for meddling politicans, they'd do it even better.

I was calling on behalf of an 82 year old lady and I actually had hard evidence of the criminals ID to pass on.

I do not respect the police because I have plenty of personal evidence to base my opinion on.

Trust the police and usuing them are different things.

I suspect your are policeman. What do you think about the death of Ian Thomlinson and the fact that none of the police on the video reported seeing anything?
