A NIGHT of heavy rain and strong winds has caused disruption across Oxfordshire.

Enslow Bridge in Bunkers Hill, Kidlington, is closed in both directions due to flooding, and traffic is backed up along the A44 Woodstock Road due to surface water.

On the A34 northbound in Oxford between the A4183 junction and Hinksey Hill Interchange recovery work is taking place due to an earlier accident.

Congestion is back to the Marcham Interchange.

Poor weather conditions are also affecting rail passengers.

The River Cherwell from Lower Heyford to Cherwell Bridge remains on flood warning, meaning flooding is expected.

And 21 other waterways through Oxfordshire are on flood alert, meaning flooding is possible. They are:

  • River Cherwell from Charwelton to just above Upper Heyford
  • River Cherwell from Lower Heyford down to and including Oxford
  • River Thame from Marsworth to Dorchester including Long Marston, Rowsham, North Aylesbury, Cuddington, Thame, Shabbington, Ickford, Waterperry, Cuddesdon, Wheatley, Quarrendon, Drayton St Leonard, Overy
  • Chalgrove Brook at Chalgrove and Stadhampton
  • River Thames and its tributaries from Days Lock to above Pangbourne
  • River Thames and tributaries from Buscot Wick down to Kings Lock
  • River Ock from Watchfield to Abingdon
  • Letcombe Brook at Wantage, Grove and East Hanney
  • Clanfield Brook for Clanfield Village
  • Shill Brook for Bampton
  • Sor Brook and The Bloxham Brook and their tributaries
  • River Evenlode from Moreton in Marsh to Cassington
  • River Glyme at Wootton and Woodstock
  • Ginge Brook for the Steventon area down to and including Sutton Courtenay
  • River Ray and its tributaries from Shipton Lee to and including Islip
  • Langford and Wendlebury Brooks from Stratton Audley down to near Merton, including Bicester and Wendlebury
  • River Windrush from Bourton to Newbridge
  • River Thames at Abingdon
  • River Thames at Oxford

The emergency services were on standby overnight as more than 40 trees had fallen across Oxfordshire, with two reportedly hitting cars - one in Benson and one in Charlbury.

And a nursing home in West Oxfordshire was evacuated last night due to fears that the River Evenlode may burst its banks.

Thirty-three residents of the Old Prebendal Nursing Home, in Shipton-under-Wychwood, and 14 people who live in nearby sheltered flats were moved to alternative accommodation with help from county council and NHS staff and firefighters.

The council supplied sandbags to the village amid fears that houses could be flooded by rivers and streams already swollen by yesterday's rain.

The nursing home in Station Road was flooded on July 20, 2007, when a torrential downpour over the Cotswolds led to the river bursting its banks.
