RIVERS across Oxfordshire have been put on flood alert as downpours bring problems for motorists, train passengers and homeowners.

There have been several traffic accidents across the county and two homes in Leafield, West Oxfordshire, are reported to have flooded.

It was also reported, just after 5pm, that eight homes in Bloxham had also been flooded.

And CrossCountry trains are now running up to 25 minutes late due to flooding between Banbury and Leamington Spa, and at Hampton-at-Arden.

At 5.20pm the A44 Woodstock Road at Begbroke was reported to have one lane closed southbound and queueing traffic due to surface water, while there was also flooding affecting traffic on the B4477 Monahan Way in Carterton near the leisure centre.

The Sor Brook at Bodicote and Adderbury and The Bloxham Brook have been put on a flood warning by the Environment Agency.

The agency warned property flooding can be expected for those properties close to the river.

In West Oxfordshire, the organisation has also put The River Evenlode, between Moreton in Marsh and Cassington, The River Glyme, at Wootton and Woodstock, Clanfield Brook and Shill Brook on flood alert.

Across the rest of the county, Ginge Brook, at Sutton Courtenay; The River Thames and tributaries, from Buscot Wick to Kings Lock; the River Ock, from Watchfield to Abingdon; Letcombe Brook at Wantage, Grove and East Hanney; the River Cherwell from Charwelton to Upper Heyford, have also been put on flood alert.

The Environment Agency said lighter showers are forecast until Thursday, when further rain, some of which may be heavy, is forecast for the area.

For CrossCountry, all lines have now reopened but there are continuing delays and no estimate when services will be running back to the published timetable.
